- Typing is rapidly being replaced by the computer based
- word processor. This trend results from the fact typing is
- far less cost effective than is word processing. With word
- processing software directly involved with the capabilities
- of the computer, it is only a matter of time before a total
- halt occurs in typewriter production. Quite possibly there
- is no better example of technology's great influence on our
- nation's economy and society. Although the keyboard of the
- typewriter is also built into the computer keyboard, typing
- is an obsolete term. Keyboarding describes computer entry.
- Also used to describe microcomputer data entry are the
- words keying and key entry. Being typewriter connected, we
- should expect the long used words typing and typewriting to
- expire quite slowly. Keyboarding, or keying, describes the
- key operation of all sections of the computer keyboard. In
- contrast, typing refers to the operation of a limited group
- of keys that make up the typewriter keyboard. The computer
- keyboard consists of the following key groups: the numeric
- keypad, the alphabetic keys, the cursor movers, and special
- function keys. Computer keyboards thus have four sections.
